My name is Jennifer Kaufman. I've spent over 15 years as the principal of autism and special education schools in New Jersey, guiding families through unique challenges.
I thought those experiences made me prepared for anything.
Then my grandson Ben was diagnosed with autism. Suddenly I found myself asking the same questions I'd heard from families across my desk for years. The professional knowledge was still there. But the fear, the uncertainty, the love - that was something else entirely.
That collision between the professional and the deeply personal is what this work is built on. I know what grandparents need to hear because I needed to hear it too. I know what families need from the people who love them because I am one of those people.
Everything I do - the book, the workshops, the speaking - comes from both sides of that desk.
